A video titled, I Watched It, popped up in my YouTube feed. I had to watch it immediately. It was a reaction from Prime where he shared his opinions on another video titled, Maybe some people should just give up. I watched both, and here’s what I think: people should just drop expectations. Stop expecting people to meet your standards.
In my experience, expectations have always ended up with varying degrees of disappointment. They seem like a mental tool the brain uses to predict the future for survival. For those of us living in developed countries, this feature does not help much anymore and we probably should give it less attention. When was the last time, if ever, an expectation was met? Even when it seems to be met, I usually already have a higher expectation waiting. It becomes a loop. So the simplest thing is to stop creating expectations.
To actually practice this, read the third chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. It is dedicated to Karma yoga, which is about performing action that is selfless and focused on the welfare of others. Daily practice of Karma yoga, or even just remembering it, has helped me a lot with my mental health and my growth in general.
